Why not water? I just bought some epoxy for boating, for my gluing wood project. Why? Because where I live it's hard to get anything useful in glues, they have only white glue that disolves in rain here. So the epoxy I bought needs thinning and I mixed a little and tried to thin it with water. It takes some time to stir it, but it looks like the pot life extends, and that was when I used a lot of water, maybe 60 to 70%. Now it seems like it's going to harden like when it is when not thinned at all. Just have to wait a few more hours to see the result. Anyway, it says on the box that you can clean your tools with water, so why not thin with water also?

You need to look at the manuf. recomended thinner. Most epoxy paints, like the adhesives are two part. Paint and catalyst. Some thinners are made to also be inhibitors to slow the action of the catalyst for longer pot life. Xylene is a common epoxy paint thinner.
References :
Epoxy paint is a lacquer type paint that you should mix it with a catalyst. it's like a Epoxy glue with A & B, adhesive + hardener. To thin it use Lacquer Thinner.
References :
I would say Alcohol or break fluid. both evaporate rather quickly allowing the glue to do what it does despite being thinned.
References :
I thought epoxy was a glue??
If it's paint, then what about paint thinner??
